Join a programme of pure logistics and problem solving
Integrated logistics is a need-based service for customers
This means customers outsource decision making and supply chain management to us (you!) rather than giving a supply chain ‘shopping list’ to deliver on their behalf. Your role will be one of pure logistics and problem solving, where you devise a plan of action for the customer to ensure their product or equipment travels in the best and most cost-effective way. Integrated Logistics crosses lots of Kuehne+Nagel’s business areas, so it’s complex to get to grips with but means that every day is different. The scheme is designed so you can understand how we work ‘end to end’ with customers, giving you the knowledge to make informed decisions in the future.
Is it for me?
Someone with a huge ability to empathise with a customer’s complexity and constraints, who wants a role where they can use their listening and questioning skills, will really thrive in this department. A strong moral compass is also a must; you’ll need to create and articulate solutions that acknowledge commercially sensitive information that is not to be shared outside of Integrated Logistics. You’ll be quick to pick up new skills but not afraid to ask questions; it is your curious nature, honed through our department’s supportive environment, that will help us to provide better services to our customers and help you to lay the foundations of your career at Kuehne+Nagel.
What does the programme involve?
Activities within your role might include designing logistics solutions, to outsourcing parts of a supply chain and achieving the best price for both the customer and Kuehne+Nagel, or even giving strategic oversight to a supply chain, advising on how best to manage goods journeys for different clients. Needless to say, this role needs someone with the intellect to handle complex problems.This is a two-year graduate programme comprising of rotational business placements, you'll get to grips with the following three key areas;
Logistics control centre operations
Location: Birmingham or Donnington
Duration: 8 Months
Solution development and implementation
Location: Birmingham
Duration: 8 Months
Business management
Location: Donnington
Duration: 8 Months
Where can the programme take me?
Our Integrated Logistics team has grown from 22 to 100 people in six years, so there is plenty of room for progression based on your interests. Typical routes include becoming a Project Manager, Solutions Development Manager or an Operational Team Leader. Solutions Development is a commercial role that focuses on designing, pricing and presenting enhanced supply chain solutions to our customers whilst in project management it is all about keeping the implementation of processes on track, closely managing timelines and budgets to ensure we deliver to our customers as promised. Or if your passion is people management then our operational team is the place to be.
Meet Tom - integrated logistics graduate
What made you want to work for Kuehne+Nagel?
“
I knew I wanted to work in Logistics after getting to know about supply chain management from my professors during my degree, but I wasn’t sure where to look for a role. As it happens, being regularly stuck in traffic on the M6 (surprise surprise!!) I had a lot of inspiration for which logistics companies to look up online. I remembered seeing the KN logo on the back of a lorry in front of me and so I when I got home I looked up the company website and was really excited about the career opportunities that KN had available.
What do you enjoy about your programme?
“
The rotations across the different areas of IL are great and really allow you to learn the most you can about the business and how we work with our customers – you’d never get this in a normal job. I also get lots of opportunities to work directly with our customers and to learn about their businesses and how Kuehne+Nagel add value to their supply chain.
How would you describe the training and mentoring you have received?
“
I would describe the training and mentoring as fantastic and a great feature of the programme. Each graduate is paired up with a mentor who will be with you throughout the two years of the scheme. The mentor is a senior manager in the business which makes them a great person to turn to for advice.Additionally, opportunities to study towards your CILT qualification and learning opportunities available through the graduate workshops mean you really develop through the business during the two years.
What advice would you give future graduates?
“
I think it’s important to have a good inner drive to make the most of the opportunities available and a flexibility to adapt to situations as they change. In terms of specific skills, it can be good to be a comfortable speaker and have experience with Microsoft Office as this will put you in a good position when you start. It’s really important however to be able to work with others as teamwork is at the heart of the business.
